Well here we are mid point in January and how are those resolutions panning out that we all have a habit of making?
Struggling? Feel like you’re missing some goals? Don’t worry you are not alone.
Staggeringly 42% of people who make New Year's Resolutions never succeed and fail on their resolution each year.
On the flip side research shows, people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions.
So which camp are you? The 42% who miss the boat or the 58% who attain and reach their goals?
If you’re a business owner then you undoubtedly want to put yourself in the 58% camp - you’re serious about growing your business and goal setting gives you a clear focus about what you want to achieve for the year ahead.
The thing is with to-do lists is that it is easy to get carried away. Before you know it you have so many jobs to do you don’t know where to start? As business owners we are all aware that sometimes we take on a project so large and overwhelming that you end up staring at it for weeks not knowing where to begin.
The secret to staying on top of the list is to chunk that list down into bite size manageable pieces that enable it to go from 'to do' list to a 'ta-da' list!
By breaking your list down into quick win points you can regain your focus. Actions are worked through, one-at-a-time, until the task is accomplished or project completed.
By reducing projects down to a series of smaller more comfortable to manage and compute chunks we are far less likely to find the task daunting and overwhelming because all we need to do is focus on one small, manageable part at a time.
Our brains work better that way and there’s an added feel good bonus in that you get the ‘TA-DA’ feeling.
“TA-DA” is great because it just changes your whole perception of the list, from one of “oh heavens, I cannot achieve any of this today” to “Yes! I am getting stuff done and going places!”
And the sense of accomplishment when you get those things done can’t be beat. It is a real motivator.
You either choose to run the day to your tune or if you don’t it will run you, and run you ragged. You have the power to give yourself valuable time and freedom back. You can choose to tackle all your business administration and marketing tasks single handedly in a superhuman style or act clever and outsource to a virtual business support specialist and give yourself more time to focus.
Tips for chunking down your task list:-
Break the project, plan or goal down into small, manageable, bite-sized chunks and list them; keep the chunks concise.
Prioritise these chunks according to their order of importance.
Place important and urgent tasks at the top of the list. If you’re in business, place important sales calls and all tasks directly related to producing immediate income at the top of your list.
To use your list, simply work your way through it in order, dealing with the high priority tasks first, then the next level and the next level and so on. As you complete tasks, tick them off or strike them through.
